Early Life and Education
Dr. Akshay completed his undergraduate medical education at MGM Institute of Health Sciences, Navi Mumbai, where he pursued his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) between 2009 and 2014. During his medical school years, he developed a strong interest in ophthalmology, inspired by the specialty’s unique combination of medicine, microsurgery, technology, and visual rehabilitation.
Following his internship, he pursued postgraduate training in Ophthalmology through the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, completing his Master of Surgery (MS) in Ophthalmology between 2016 and 2019. His residency provided extensive exposure to comprehensive eye care, surgical ophthalmology, retinal diseases, cataract management, and emergency ophthalmic care.
Recognizing the rapidly evolving nature of ophthalmology, Dr. Nayak pursued additional specialist fellowships. He completed a Fellowship in Cataract and Intraocular Lens (IOL) Surgery at Sankara Eye Foundation, Bengaluru, followed by a Fellowship in Medical Retina at Nethradhama Eye Hospital. He also earned the prestigious Fellowship of the International Council of Ophthalmology (FICO), an internationally recognized qualification demonstrating advanced ophthalmic knowledge and clinical competence.
Alongside his medical training, he pursued studies in Healthcare Management through the Indian School of Business, reflecting his interest in healthcare systems, leadership, and hospital administration.
Career
Dr. Nayak’s professional career reflects a progression through multiple subspecialties of ophthalmology.
Following his ophthalmology residency at KIMS Hospital, Bengaluru, he pursued advanced fellowship training to strengthen his expertise in cataract surgery, intraocular lens implantation, and retinal diseases.
His fellowship at Sankara Eye Foundation provided focused training in cataract surgery and intraocular lens management, helping him develop surgical skills essential for modern ophthalmic practice. He subsequently completed a short-term cataract fellowship at H. V. Desai Eye Hospital, Pune, one of India’s respected eye care institutions.
In 2021, he joined Aster DM Healthcare as a Specialist in Comprehensive Ophthalmology, where he provided clinical care across a broad range of ophthalmic conditions. During this period, he managed cataracts, refractive disorders, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma screening, retinal disorders, and general ophthalmic consultations.
His growing interest in retinal diseases led him to pursue a dedicated Medical Retina Fellowship at Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital in 2023. Following successful completion of the fellowship, he was appointed Consultant in Medical Retina and General Ophthalmology at Nethradhama in January 2024.
