Introduction
Dr. Arghya Chattopadhyay is a rheumatologist, clinical immunologist, researcher, and academic leader known for his work in autoimmune diseases, inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disorders, and clinical rheumatology education. With extensive experience spanning internal medicine, rheumatology, and clinical immunology, he has built a career dedicated to the diagnosis and management of complex autoimmune diseases while contributing to academic training and research in the field.
He currently serves as Academic Director of the Asian Institute of Immunology & Rheumatology (AIIR) and practices as a consultant rheumatologist in Kolkata. His clinical and academic interests include systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, inflammatory arthritis, vasculitis, and other immune-mediated disorders.
Early Life and Education
Dr. Arghya completed his schooling at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, where he studied from 1993 to 2002. His early education instilled the discipline, academic rigor, and commitment to service that would later shape his medical career.
He pursued his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital between 2002 and 2007.
Driven by a strong interest in adult medicine and complex multisystem diseases, he went on to complete his Doctor of Medicine (MD) in General Medicine at Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences between 2010 and 2013. During his postgraduate training, he gained extensive experience managing acute and chronic medical conditions, including intensive cardiac care and critical care medicine.
His growing fascination with autoimmune diseases and immune-mediated disorders led him to pursue superspecialty training in Rheumatology at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, where he completed his DM in Rheumatology between 2017 and 2020.
Career
Dr. Arghya's professional journey reflects a steady progression from internal medicine to superspecialized rheumatology practice.
Following his MD training, he worked as Junior Resident in the Department of Medicine at Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences from 2010 to 2013, where he managed a wide range of acute and chronic medical illnesses with significant exposure to intensive care medicine.
He subsequently joined SSKM Hospital as Senior Resident in Rheumatology, where he gained experience in managing autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
In 2017, he joined Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research as Senior Resident in DM Rheumatology, receiving advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic and immune-mediated disorders.
After completing his DM training, he returned to Kolkata and served as Clinical Tutor in the Department of Rheumatology at Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research from 2020 to 2021.
From 2021 to 2024, he worked as Assistant Professor in Rheumatology while continuing his clinical practice and academic activities. Simultaneously, he served as Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist at IPGME&R and SSKM Hospital, contributing to patient care, teaching, and research.
In December 2024, he was appointed Academic Director of the Asian Institute of Immunology and Rheumatology, a role that reflects his commitment to advancing rheumatology education and specialist training.
