Introduction
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, widely known as AIIMS Delhi, is one of India’s most prominent medical institutions, recognized for its leadership in medical education, research, patient care, and public health. Located in New Delhi, the institute was established as an autonomous institution of national importance and has played a central role in shaping modern medical training and healthcare delivery in India.
AIIMS Delhi was created with the vision of developing a centre of excellence that could set high standards in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, bring advanced medical facilities together in one place, and support India’s need for highly trained healthcare professionals. Over the decades, it has grown into a benchmark institution for clinical care, academic training, and medical research in the country.
History and Evolution
The idea behind AIIMS Delhi emerged in the years following India’s independence, when the country was working to build strong national institutions in science, education, and healthcare. The Health Survey and Development Committee, chaired by Sir Joseph Bhore, had recommended in 1946 the establishment of a national medical center that could produce highly qualified medical manpower for India’s expanding healthcare needs.
This vision was strongly supported by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Health Minister Rajkumari Amrit Kaur. Their aim was to create a medical institution that would not only serve India but also set the pace for medical education and research in Southeast Asia. The proposal received support from the Government of New Zealand, whose grant under the Colombo Plan helped make the project possible. The foundation stone of AIIMS was laid in 1952.
AIIMS Delhi was finally established in 1956 through an Act of Parliament as an autonomous institution. It was designed to serve as a nucleus for nurturing excellence in all aspects of healthcare, including teaching, research, and patient services.
Academic Excellence
AIIMS Delhi was established with the objective of developing patterns of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education across all branches of medicine. Its academic model was intended to demonstrate a high standard of medical education for other medical colleges and allied institutions in India.
The institute brings together educational facilities of the highest order for the training of personnel in important branches of health activity. It also works toward self-sufficiency in postgraduate medical education, making it a major center for advanced medical training in the country.
By virtue of the AIIMS Act, the institute grants its own medical degrees and academic distinctions. This autonomous academic status has allowed AIIMS Delhi to maintain a distinctive position in Indian medical education and to design training systems aligned with national healthcare priorities.
Patient Care
Alongside education and research, patient care is a defining part of AIIMS Delhi’s identity. The institute was created to nurture excellence in all aspects of healthcare, and its hospital services have made it one of the most important public healthcare institutions in India.
AIIMS Delhi provides specialized and super-specialized medical services, serving patients from across the country. Its official website lists patient-focused services such as OPD appointments, patient portals, emergency-related information, telemedicine guidelines, blood donation initiatives, and public health resources, reflecting its large role in clinical service delivery.
