The Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS) stands as a landmark institution in Indian medical education, recognized as the country’s first rural medical college. Established in 1969, during the centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi, MGIMS was founded under the leadership of Dr. Sushila Nayyar, a physician, public health advocate, and close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. The institute was created under the Kasturba Health Society with the aim of addressing the healthcare needs of rural India while creating a new model for socially conscious medical education.

Its roots are closely linked with Sevagram Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi spent significant years of his life, giving the institution a unique philosophical and cultural identity.

MGIMS offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral training across multiple medical disciplines. The institute admits students to its MBBS program as well as MD and MS specialties, maintaining a strong emphasis on academic rigor, research, and clinical competence.

The institute is affiliated with Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and functions under recognition from India’s national medical regulatory authorities.

At the heart of MGIMS lies Kasturba Hospital, a major teaching hospital that serves thousands of patients from rural and semi-urban communities. Over the decades, the hospital has evolved into a large tertiary-care center while continuing its original mission of affordable and accessible healthcare.

The hospital remains an integral part of student training, clinical research, and community outreach programs.
